I don't know that anyone is playing. Unless you don't care that the evo may go down the tubes. Or if you don't think it's a real possibility.

brand car? Some of you don't open your eyes and see the big picture. You can **** and moan all you like about the new style of the next generation Evo, etc. What you don't understand is that this company is in a truly dire situation and are barely hanging by a thread. The company needs to revamp their business in a big way and the way to do that is sell more cars. How does it hurt for Mitsu to become a healthier corporation? You don't think that's good for people who actually own
cars???
Well the name of the car says it all, an EVOLUTION. And I think now they are finally combining hi-tech looks with the power. I love my 8 though, 8 all the way, the classic, one and only last of the true evo's. The 8 is a 7 with a new body kit on it. So there...heheheh. Anyway, evo x is like an audi with acura feel. I like that,...but nothing beats being able to mod the living smack out of a true and tested powerplant,...but who can argue with brushed aluminum interior, sweet. Gosh, now i dont know what to think, HAHAAHAHAHAHAAH....
I like EvoIVs haha =P
I personally like the modest look of the Evos I - IX. And as one stated earlier...liking the looks of the Evo is an acquired taste. So the same is true with the X.

Well all I can say is if they are looking for new customers, they will certainly find them with that new X. Personally I could never bring myself to part with $36k for the current EVO. Let me put this as gently as I can… The current EVO looks too much like a riced up cheapo econo box. Oh I know the performance is there, and I know all the parts are functional, so it’s not really rice. You see the problem is most normal people don’t know this. So when you’re proudly driving around town in your marvel of Japanese engineering, everyone around you is thinking, “look at that idiot in his riced up encono box”. Many of you are now thinking, “well I don’t care how others perceive me, as long as I’m happy”. But you will one day learn that this can be more important than you initially realized; both at work and at play. For this reason I would rather pay a little more and get an Audi S4, fast yet tastefully understated. The boy racer look is fine… If you’re a boy racer. I am not, so the look doesn’t suit me.
Those who disregarded these attributes and still purchased the current model car are relatively few. It’s a niche market. And these mean a limited market. The new car will draw from a wider pool of customers. It will range from those who will be saving every penny and need to work two jobs just to make the down payment, to those who have the cash just lying around and can buy it outright, and to everyone in between. It would be silly for Mitsu not to go after this much larger market.
One can understand the desire for the car to look more “Rally”. It is after all supposed to be based off a rally car. The hard thing is finding a way to accomplish that without going totally overboard.
That said, there is one thing that is certain, $36k is close to $40k out the door… For that kind of money the car should not only go like a $40k car, it should look like one also. The current car does not, the new car does. I know there are far more that agree with this statement than those that disagree. Perhaps not on this current generation owners forum, but Mitsu will have to move beyond this current niche market anyway, if they want to survive. Mitsu apparently knows this too.

From an outsider looking in current Evo’s and WRX STi’s are like an exclusive club. You have either chosen performance above all else (excluding style and refinement) or like the looks of the existing Evo’s (people bought Aztecs and buy xB’s and Elements so to each there own).
The existing style and refinement on Evo’s and STi’s appeals to a very core niche. I applaud you all who either don’t mind or sacrifice style and refinement for pure overall performance. Your dedication is impressive. Even though you love your Evo’s they are not conducive to even moderate sale volumes. Mitsubishi regardless of its rally heritage is a car company and their job is to sell cars. They can be commended so far in their ability stay the course and produce a fine machine purely for the enthusiast. That time is over.
Mitsubishi needs sales from all of its product lines including Evo’s. This means they must appeal to a wider audience. This way more will be able to experience it. Even if all current Evo owners never buy another Evo, this change in style will, IMO triple if not more, world wide sales as long as they price it competitively. I am still not convinced that priced at 40k people will by a Mitsubishi, I know I can not and would not. STi’s are around 33k or so, it is their most direct competitor, they need to remain somewhere in the ballpark of 33k.
Now of course if you are a true performance enthusiast the shape of the X will not matter so that coupled with new buyers will make this the most successful Evo ever (assuming they don’t screw it up of course, but then that was a given).

The fuss about the X is surely comical to say the least. Mitsubishi is in trouble financially, but they've enjoyed recent success as well. You can tell by the release of some of their newer vehicles that they're trying to get the ship righted again. I'm not guessing what they are going to do with the X because I was wrong the last time I did that with the IX. A lot of people on this forum were like me in thinking that the IX would be just another VIII, but a little better, maybe. Now, the IX is so much better than an VIII stock it's not even funny. I bought mine a few months before the IX was coming out....I should have waited!
Still, I say all of this because Mitsubishi has always gotten the EVO right. Whether they let the Eclipse go to crap, until recently, but the EVO has always lived up to the hype. I'm thinking the X will not disappoint either. They will be going after newer markets I'm sure, but I don't think they'll forget all of us die-hard owners as well. They never have, hence, the tunability of these cars and performance. I'd rather wait. Wait until the car is out or at least a production car is out, then draw all of these conclusions about Mitsu messing the EVO up.
I'm not sure I agree with the assessment that people look at our cars as "boy racer" or "ricer." Then again, I'm not in my fifties either so maybe it does look a bit racey to some older folks. The current styling of the car is fine, and I don't think all of the glazed over stares I get is because somebody really hates my car.

The evo does not go like a $40k car, it goes like a $70k+ car. But, I agree we will have to wait and see, I am just hoping it doesn't go badly. I don't see why mitsu didn't go with performance and class by way of the galant ralliart, or maybe making a new trim level of evo. I hope they don't eliminate a legend just to sell more cars that don't inspire the feelings that evo owners have for their cars. And it needs to stay true to rally. Those are my points and again, we will have to wait and see.
