This past weekend I decided that while my dash was out it'd be a good time to flock it. I let it finish curing today. The process is pretty straightforward and it definitely didn't turn out perfect but for $40 I'm pretty happy with it and knowing that I won't have reflection issues while driving, plus it's fuzzy!
- Do it in a warmish room if you can (60-75F), I did it in my garage that was about 20F and the adhesive took a while to settle even though it is self leveling. If I were to do it again in a room this cold I would've thinned the adhesive first.
- Buy a wider paint brush, they send a tiny 1/2" brush with it. I bought a 1 1/2" brush at walmart that was a perfect size for the can
- Paint fast and have the fiber applicator/duster thing already filled before you start, you'll need as much time as possible to get the whole dash covered
- Lay down a tarp or garbage bags to reclaim what doesn't get on the dash. You will need to reclaim fibers to finish the whole dash unless you buy a second bag (1 is enough though). I didn't do this and had to scrape it off my floor which wasted time
- Do the front edge (the one that faces you) first. The applicator doesn't push the fibers out as well when used upside down and when there's only a small amount left it barely pushes any out.
- Pop your vents out with a screw driver and put a stripe of tape along the lower section so you don't get adhesive lower down
- Use all of the fibers. You can't put too much on, whatever doesn't get held by the adhesive can easily be blown off. I gave it a day and a half to fully cure and then vacuumed the whole dash clean.
That roof tube is a dead tube. It needs to go to the corners.
It's modeled off a couple pictures and my memory, didn't bother to get dimensions since I'm just using this for representation purposes. I couldn't remember how the roof bar is run but I think one of the ends is in a corner.
You know, as I think about flocking my dash also, I realize I dont have the cutouts I'll need for a cage (eventually). Wondering if I could see your dash and make some similar cutouts. Can you take some pictures of how/where its been cut?
