Electrical Gremlins - symptoms and how to fix
Do your wipers have a mind of their own?
Are your headlight, parking lights, dash lights, or you tail lights not turning off or flickering?
Does your horn stay on?
Car not turn off?
You may be a victim of the "Rain Gremlins"
Don't worry help is here. Heres what happened and what you need to fixt it
- Wire Cutters
- Wire Strippers
- Shrink Tubes
- A trusty Solder Gun
- Silicone (To seal the grommet DUH)
OK reach down by your left leg you'll see a drivers kick panel, take that off. Ok now you see a bunch of plugs in a big white bracket thingy. Well thats a junction linking Dash and column functions to the fuse panel under the hood.
Well guess what??? That harness goes through a grommet in the inner fender out to the fuse block under the hood and What do you know? The seal is crap. So when it rains water gets through the grommet, runs down the harness, and seats it self nicely on the exposed pins in those previously mentioned connectors. No need to explain what water and electrical pins do.
They get corroded and make for a hek of a flakey connection. Chances are you see a bunch of green corosion there huh.
So now you get to carefully one by one cut each wire on the front and back of the connectors and hard solder them all together.
Guess what you have no more electrical issues.
Don't forget to seal your grommets up with some silicone
If you end up with you SES (Airbag) light on. Which has happened to a couple of us cause guess what that circuit is part of the harness as well. You'll need to simply get it reset (Hint try a body shop they usually have a scanner to talk to the SES ECU Mitsu charges like 120 to hook it up)
Thanks scheides for the awesome pics
Here you can see where the harness comes through the inner fender and into the cabin of the car.

Connector notice the green that's corrosion baby

What you'll be left with once a connector is bypassed. Yes the wire is the same color on both sides (IIRC)

I soldered all my connections but here is the same effect and will work just as well

Seal up those grommets pic of grommet from outside behind the fender lining

I would show them this thread and the right way to fix it
they replaced the conectors.... now I had them wrap the wireing harness under the drivers side fender..... Mitsubishi did not cover the labor this time even tho its less than 12 mos ago.... They said I am on my own.
did any of u have an MR with the volt gauge? because my SRS light came on and now everytime i drive in the rain the volt gauge bounces all over the place and my radio shuts off. I just checked all the connectors behind the radio hoping it was that and not the harness under the kick panel. Everything appears ok behind the radio. I have taken the car to the dealership and even though its under warranty they refuse to really fix it and when i take it there they clean the harness reset the light charge me 240 dollars and then the light comes back on a week later. Im partial to just fixing it the way u did but idk if they will void my warranty.

2 questions. First, the wires on the wiring harness are not the same color on both sides. If you follow a color to the opposite location, many are different. Is there something i'm missing? Second, I did the fix and now my horn beeps every time I try to reconnect the battery. Any idea why this could happen? Any help is appreciated. Thanx.

I haven't fixed one in a while now myself but I was pretty sure they were the same color. Either way I made sure to only cut (front to back) and solder one wire at a time to make that a non issue.
I have at home the cut connector with the wires hanging from both ends. I can help you out later on if needed..
PM me

This is probably the most useful thread on the forums thus far. In the Northeast we have had alot of rain and over the weekend. I was up at The Shop in Norwalk and on my way home I was at a traffic light my wipers turned off on their own and turned back on and wouldn't respond to the switch. But I made it home. This morning when I got to work in the parking garage my headlights wouldn't shut off at all. I just hope I can get thru this week with no more problems and I'll have to fix this on Sat. At least the remainder of the week should be nice and we should have nice warm weather but I'm going to pull the connector when I get home just to check it out
the horn and right blinker run through that connector. You may have accidentally switched them.
And if you haven't tried working on it yet, then you definitely have a problem.
