I don't believe it at all. There are a ton of Evo's in my area that autox and drag race and not one of them have had a problem getting warranty work done. I have, along with others around here, autox'ed for 2 years and been to the dragstrip and still have a warranty. I'm by no means stock either. They don't say a thing when I take it to the dealer. I just had my brake calipers and wing replaced under warranty. They could've easily said the calipers were damaged as a result of racing but they didn't.
If anyone is spying it isn't Mitsu Corp., it is the dealers or regional reps from your area that don't like to honor abused or modified cars.

You are right is not Mitsubishi, its the dealership and regional management that does it. Your dealership is one in a million.

So, we have ONE instance of them ALLEGEDLY doing this, and the guy didn't even follow through.

The hype to reality ratio is way high on this story.

I just took the Evo to a dealer in Sac, CA and as the tech was driving my car on to the lift he got out and said "Yours feels like all those guys we caught racing up in Willows @ Thinderhill last month."

That seems like an admission to me of looking to void warranties.

is track racing 1/4 mile a reason for them to void your warrenty?

any "racing" is a reason for them to void your warranty.

It seems that Mitsubishi has set up an automatic web search that looks for registration and results information for any Mitsubishi. They then capture the race results information, match it to vehicle purchase and service records and proactively put the car on "warranty restriction". Those of you with new cars, may want to not list the actual car make or use a screen name.

I bought this car for my son about 2 months ago. The voiding of the motor and drive train warranty is especially puzzling to me as I was completely open with the dealer that sold the car to me, that I was going to allow my son to participate in SCCA events -- even invited the sales person and his manager to come for a ride along. Was the dealer's response to tell me that this would void the warranty on the new car? Nope. His response was "...what a cool way to keep your son from getting in trouble on the streets."

Sure would have appreciated knowing that parking lots and cones would void the warranty on the Evo. I guess although the car is "race inspired", Mitsubishi considers chasing cones at 25 to 60 mph in parking lot to be too much for their "embodying everything a performance enthusiast looks for in a car" model.
You mean to tell me you weren't aware that you were supposed to drive a high performance car like a grandmother? You've gotta be kiddin' me!

That's a pretty crappy way to treat your customers. While I understand that they don't want to cover things that are clearly caused by abuse, searching websites is a bit extreme.

In a way, I guess I agree that it is their right to check, as they aren't stuck paying for driver abuse occurences, but on the same note, it's just wrong. NOT COOL.

It reminds me of what Subaru Of America (SOA) did to www.iwsti.com. www.iwsti.com used to be called "imprezasti.com," I believe, and the owner of imprezasti.com got a nice letter from SOA's legal department threatening to sue if he did not change the same of the site.

Nearly a month later, someone from SOA posted on the "new" www.iwsti.com a survey or something, asking for feedback on Subaru models, and what improvements should be made in the future. What a slap in the face to every Subaru enthusiast on that site.

Instead of working AGAINST their enthusiast base, companies should be trying to work alongside of them, and offering their support.

That's just crappy. I'm sorry about your situation.

Don't be fooled. Subaru doesn't like to honor warranties either. But, of course, it's the dealerships that are most of the problem with Subaru.

I get my car serviced at Frederick Motor Company in Frederick, MD. I have 7300mi on it, so only serviced once. The first time I went in there, they started asking me probing questions like how fast the car was, if I had launched it yet, taken it to the track, modified it, etc.

Maybe they were just trying to start conversation, but to me it came across like they were trying to bait me into saying something, so they could make note of it on my file, or something.

DO NOT get baited.

If you really like your Evo, the STi may disappoint you, if you're not looking for better interior quality or ride quality. The Evo is nearly just as fast in a straight line, and handles better. Plus it's much cheaper to modify.

Thoroughly review your decision before just "settling" for a car. I thoroughly thought through my decision to get an STi, and I have absolutely no regrets. Both are great cars, but the STi is just the one for me.

Mitsubishi should just offer the Evolution without a warranty, so far it's been pointless for me even on KNOWN defects of the 2003 model year. Best backed cars in the world, 'sure' ... tell that to the guy who's rocker panel is all chipped up and rusting because the rear driver's side door on the lower portion is creased in and yet they don't bother to do a recall. Instead they decide to 3M the rocker panel areas on all the years following 2003, acknowledging that there is in fact a problem.

wow....back from the dead.......

There are always two sides to every story.....

Mitsu does what most manufacturers do... insurance companies do it to........ if you race you void your warranty..... just like your insurance won't cover your car at auto-x or time trials on the track or hill climbs, etc........

You want to play......you have to be prepared to pay......

as for rock chips...who ****ing cares.... do you want them to repaint your car due to some rock chips? people ***** about the dumbest ****.

This might not be a bad idea if implemented correctly. There are a number of ways that this could be configured, from getting a secondary company to be responsible for the warrantly, do a predetermine % split, blah , blah. Of course there are things that are mandatory for them to warrenty emissions etc. But there is some merit in your idea. At least you would know where you stood, when you went in for service.

I'm not saying rock chips in other areas of the car, of course that's not a warranty issue. What I'm saying is THERE IS A PROBLEM with the driver's side rocker panel area that is BEING chipped away due to rocks because the rear passenger door is creased in at the lower portion from the FACTORY.

When I received my car, I thankfully knew about this problem by reading evolutionm.net and took the steps to prevent it from chipping the whole damn thing up. On top of that, the dealership I bought the car from actually CALLED me up a week after I bought the car to ask if my service work was done well. I asked what work was performed and she said, the re-painting of the rocker panel area on the driver's side! So go ahead and tell me this isn't a problem? I still have my service manager looking for the TSB on this one, I bet there isn't because once they acknowledge the problem it's going to cost them money. Easier to just say it's not covered because it's just "rock chips" ... then pull out the door on every 2003 model affected and re-paint the rocker panel area.
