I love DSG. I hope to have it in my next car.
There is a rev limiter on manual cars too, so I don't see a difference there since you can't grenade either one. My '06 VW GLI did shift when you got well past redline. I understand that some would prefer that it simply bounced off the limiter rather than upshift. It's a programming choice by the manufacturer. I was happy with the function of my GLI.
Yes, the DSG VW uses is currently using is limited in the amount of torque it can handle, however, the Bugatti Veyron has a different DSG, and puts out over 1000hp and 922lb/ft, so obviously, DSG can be built for whatever power the car will have, and need not be a weak link.
Those of you with "lag" concerns really baffle me. It shifts faster than you can. Yes, the shift can take time depending on the situation, but if you were going to do a rev-matched shift, there's no way you'd do it any faster, or better than a DSG can.

Evo X tranny ???
so one of the most talked about things about the new evo X is what transmission it will have. i've done a few searches and found some info. i also talked to a sales man ( fellow evo owner) for mitsu and asked about the tranny and he had some interesting info. i asked him if he knew if it was going to have the DSG/ SMG transmission (dsg has been used by vw for awhile now and i believe bmw uses the smg) and he said the evo X will be offered with a standard 5 speed manual and paddle shifters. so it wont be AUTOMATIC ! that's nonsense. i can't wait for the X's to come out. DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!
According to Motor Trend Radio on sunday, they said it was going to be a DSG. I don't know how truly knowledgable the two guys talking were of the car. But one guy had written the MT article. But the guy that said it would be a DSG was not the guy that wrote the article. But the writer never corrected him or confirmed him either.
+1 ^^ That's one good point. Anything that prevents accidental abuse of the transmission or over-revving the engine is a good thing. I don't get why so manyy ppl think it's better to have an antiquated, risky mechanism when there is a better, safer alternative
. Also, I don't think that
is going to purposely release a weak motor in their flagship car.... I thought the new EVO was going to have even more power than the present one. Why would they take a chance like increasing the power in a weaker engine instead of using the old engine? I'm confused by the EVO X haters rationale. It seems that they think that
is going to release an inferior product so they can fail in a market of very stiff competition... I do not read signals in that direction from what articles I've read. Most articles extol the virtues of the new car emphasizing it's superior handling, power and style over the previous models......
