Just got the new car and driver mag. It says the new evo will most likely be starting just under 30k and going up to around 40. If I can get one under 30, it may be back on my list, if not, say hello subaru or mazda. Something does'nt sound right, I can't see where there could be 10k of options. The last evo did'nt even have options did it? Oh, the article did say it will be around 3500 lbs, quite heavy for a 2L if you ask me, especially before the turbo spools up...
Would you get Evo X in DSG or manual?
I know we still have a long way to go until the Evo X comes out and the decision maker would test drive both, but I would just like to know what the general Evom crowd thinks.
Personally, I am torn between the 2 transmissions.
DSG is pretty much the future, even Mitsubishi says so. I have seen videos of how fast DSG shift in a GTI. It is insanely fast. Seeing how Mitsubishi said that the Evo X will have a DSG even better than the one now is unthinkable. This is the reason why I would pick it over a manual tranny. However, I am not sure how well the DSG handles more power, since I would like to mod the Evo X
I used to drive a auto G35 coupe, and when i drove my friend's manual 3 series I was surprised at how fun manual is. From what i heard, manual also gives the driver the "full driving experience", which i cannot comprehend since I have not owned a manual car before. I am pretty sure that manual will be able to take the beating from more power which is a plus.
I think the biggest factor for me is which transmission will make the car faster, and I am pretty sure EVO with DSG will be faster since it can probably out shift any living being. Another big factor that would persuade me to go DSG is that it will probably run better in snow. One of the reason I pick Evo X is because of the fabulous AWD Mitsubishi makes.

If both are offered (which seems in doubt now
) I would choose Manual. I *really* enjoy driving manual cars, so I know I'll be happy with a Manual.
But if performance is your main concern, I would reccomend the DSG.
However, I don't see how a DSG would be better in the snow. When I drive in the snow, I use the clutch a lot to control the torque to the wheels. Granted, I have never owned an AWD, but I think torque control will still be important in the snow.

Mitsubishi has said the Evo X's power train was designed from the ground up to work in conjunction with DCT. So it developed it's own SST to further integrate and enhance power delivery. Throwing a stick in this car a year from release really seems like an afterthought just to appease the die hards imo.
So i'd rather spend my $$ on a transmission that had extensive R&D in-house and was designed for the car. People like to say this new technology is untested and will probably be unreliable etc. But given Mitsu's situation, at times like this car companies usually put out better and more reliable products because it desperately wants to win us over.

As a major DSG lover I have to admit that serious snow/ice performance would likely suffer compared to the fine clutch control you can have with a manual.
Without mods I have no doubt that the DSG will be faster. VW didn't design the DSG they use in most of their vehicles with a lot of headroom for mods, but Mitsu is going to use a different unit, so there's really no telling at this point whether it will be stronger or weaker than the manual. Remember the DSG in the Veyron handles 1000 hp and over 900 lb. ft. of torque so it's up to Mitsubishi which one will be better for mods.
Personally, if I were interested in modding, I'd pick up a used 8 or 9.

If I was going to buy an Evo X, I'd make myself wait until it has been tested with both transmissions. I personally like a manual, but if the DSG has significant advantages, then I'd consider it. There are too many unknowns to make a decision, and most of them have been stated.
What is the price difference between the transmissions?
What is the power-handling capacity of the DSG?
How hard/expensive will it be to modify the DSG?
Do the transmissions have the same gear ratios?
How does the DSG programming act, does it interfere with my driving or does it predict what I want? <--- Probably the most important criteria to me to enjoy the DSG, because I hate how most automatic transmissions have a mind of their own.
